Motorola Xoom: A tough competition against Apple iPad?

Every concept entering the market sees competitors lining up within no time; it applies to the tablet PC-s as well. And now, two of the titans of the electronics world lock horns to gain supremacy. They are Apple and Motorola and the latter seems to surpass the expectation of all die-hard iPad fanatics.

That’s the Motorola zoom we are talking about and from the specs, it seems (if not evident) that Apple’s iPad is bound to head the garbage cans. That it will be $30 lower than the iPad is not the point here but Xoom’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor that will make it a faster device than the single-core iPad.

Also, the bigger screen; though Xoom’s 10.1-inch screen is not much bigger than iPad’s 9.7 inches but the screen resolution is bound to make a difference. The 1280X800 screen at 160dpi is way better than iPad’s 1024×768 at 132ppi; so is the RAM at 1 GB compared to the 256 MB of the iPad. All in all, Xoom promises things that are not only bigger but faster too.

As for the other differences, please refer to the points below:

  • Camera: Xoom has twin-cameras (2 MP and 5 MP respectively) and is capable of recording 720p videos. iPad is just zero in this aspect.

  • Video Playback: Xoom plays 1080p videos while iPad plays 720p.

  • Expandable memory: iPad has none while the Xoom features a huge 32 GB.

  • Flash: No support for iPad.

  • Ports:  None for iPad; HDMI and USB 2.0 for Xoom.

  • Additional features: Xoom’s Barometer and Gyroscope

  • Network: iPad has 3G but Xoom has 4G.

It’s time for the iPad to bite some major dust unless Apple reconsiders beefing up its interface, the range of unique applications, the overall design and of course, the graphics performance.

Xoom is definitely a tough competition to iPad. Waiting for these tablets to lessen their prices someday, may be even I can buy one :)
